Tudor House and Garden

Widely regarded as Southampton’s most important historic building, Tudor House & Garden offers a unique window into over 800 years of local life. Located in the heart of the Old Town at St Michael’s Square, this beautifully preserved timber-framed house has evolved from a grand family home into a museum that tells the story of Southampton from the medieval era through to the present day.

Whether you are exploring the atmospheric “Old Town” or looking for a family-friendly educational experience, a visit to Tudor House is a journey through the centuries, featuring everything from Norman ruins to Victorian artifacts.

800 Years of History in One Location

The site is a fascinating architectural “patchwork” of different eras. While the main black-and-white timber house dates back to the late 15th century, the grounds contain structures that are significantly older, reflecting the city’s long-standing status as a major trading port.

The Main House (15th Century)

Built by Sir John Dawtrey—a powerful merchant who helped provision Henry VIII’s navy—the main house is a masterpiece of Tudor architecture. Visitors can explore grand rooms like the Banqueting Hall and the Kitchens, which have been painstakingly restored to reflect the various periods of the house’s history.

King John’s Palace (12th Century)

Accessible through the garden, these impressive ruins are actually a Norman merchant’s house dating back to around 1180. Despite its name, there is no evidence King John ever stayed here, but it remains one of the finest examples of Norman domestic architecture in England. After the French raids of 1338, the building was incorporated into the town’s defensive walls.

Must-See Highlights at Tudor House

Beyond the architecture, the museum houses a vast collection of artifacts that bring the personal stories of Southampton residents to life:

  • The Tudor Knot Garden: A meticulously researched recreation of a 1500s formal garden. It features authentic plants, low box hedges, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a “hidden gem” in the city centre.
  • The Attic & Cellars: The house contains hidden spaces, including a WWII air-raid shelter in the cellar and an attic that reveals the intricate timber “skeleton” of the building.
  • Rare Graffiti: Look closely at the walls in certain rooms to see 16th-century maritime graffiti, including incredibly detailed sketches of ships and animals left by former inhabitants and sailors.
  • The “Big Show”: An immersive introductory experience in the Banqueting Hall that uses light and sound to “weave” the history of the house together for visitors.
