Mayflower Theatre

As the largest theatre on the South Coast, the Mayflower Theatre is the jewel in Southampton’s cultural crown. Since opening its doors in 1928, it has evolved from a grand Art Deco “movie palace” into a premier venue that hosts the UK’s biggest West End touring productions, from blockbuster musicals and opera to ballet and pantomime.

With a seating capacity of over 2,200, the Mayflower provides a majestic setting that combines 1920s romanticism with state-of-the-art 21st-century facilities, following a multi-million-pound restoration in recent years.

A Heritage of Entertainment

Originally opened as the Empire Theatre, the building has lived many lives—including a long stint as the Gaumont cinema. Its stage has been graced by legends such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Queen. Today, it is run by an independent charitable trust, ensuring that every ticket sold helps maintain this Grade II listed landmark.

Note for Summer 2026: The theatre is undergoing a major £12.7 million technical upgrade. This includes a full replacement of the “Grid” (the system above the stage that holds lighting and scenery) between May and August 2026, alongside a significant increase in the number of customer toilets and improved rehearsal spaces.

Dining and Bars

The Mayflower offers more than just a show; it provides a complete evening out with several on-site dining options:

  • Ovation Restaurant: Located within the theatre, Ovation offers a refined, seasonal menu perfect for pre-theatre dining. Booking is highly recommended as it often sells out on show nights.
  • Theatre Bars: There are bars located on every level—the Footlights (Stalls), Circle Bar, and Spotlights (Balcony)—serving a range of wines, spirits, and local craft beers.
  • Mayflower Studios (MAST): Just a short walk away in Guildhall Square, the sister venue offers a more casual café-bar environment for light bites and coffee.

Getting to the Mayflower Theatre

The theatre is perfectly positioned for visitors travelling from across Hampshire and beyond.

  • By Train: The theatre is just a 5-minute walk from Southampton Central Station (use the north exit).
  • Parking: While the theatre does not have its own car park, the West Park Road (SO15 1FZ) and Grosvenor Square (SO15 2BE) multi-storeys are both less than a 5-minute walk away.
  • By Bus: Major bus stops (SA, SB, SC, and SD) are located nearby on Commercial Road and at the Cenotaph, served by Bluestar and First Bus.
